Psychotherapist & Therapeutic Coach
I believe good therapy should feel like a conversation with a purpose. But you don't need to know exactly where to begin, have exactly the right words, or arrive with a carefully prepared account of everything that you want to explore. We can start with what’s happening for you now, and work from there.
My approach is anchored in person-centred and psychodynamic theory, and that means I'm interested in both the person you are today, and the experiences that helped you to become that person: your relationships, family, history, beliefs, defences and the various ways you've learned to cope with life along the way. Where it’s appropriate, I’ll also draw on therapeutic coaching to help you clarify what you want, identify practical next steps, and move towards your goals with greater confidence.
I realise that sometimes there isn't an obvious crisis that brings people to therapy – sometimes it’s simply a sense that certain feelings, relationships or patterns keep repeating themselves, and you'd like to understand why. I won't tell you how to live your life. I'll listen, ask questions and, when it feels useful, challenge you. Together we'll try to understand what's happening beneath the surface and make some of the things that are difficult to see from inside your own life a little clearer.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent more than two decades working internationally as a video director and photographer, within the music and film industries. That experience gives me a particular understanding of the pressures that can accompany creative and demanding careers – uncertainty, rejection, success, burnout, identity, public scrutiny and the sometimes complicated relationship between who you are and what you do.
You certainly don't need to work in a creative industry to work with me. I see people from a wide range of backgrounds and at very different stages of life, but for those who do work in music, film, television, advertising and other creative fields, it can sometimes be useful to speak with a therapist who already understands something of that world: its language and nuances, and its particular pressures.
Most importantly, I want therapy to be somewhere you can bring your whole self – including the parts you're still trying to understand. You don't need to have everything figured out before you get in touch. If you're considering therapy and think we might work well together, you're very welcome to contact me and we can take it from there.
